WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Ukrainian Scouting has been known since it's inception as "PLAST." That word means in Ukrainian exactly the same thing as "scouting" in English—i.e. "plastun" is a "scout" or somebody sent to reconnoiter the terrain.

The word "Plastun" has a long and distinguished history; it was first used by the medieval Ukrainian Cossacks, a military order, which was established in the 15th century on the lower Dnieper river (in the "Zaporizzhia" region, or "Lands beyond the cataracts"). The Ukrainian Cossacks defended Ukraine, and indeed, all of the Eastern Europe from invasion of nomad hordes from Central Asia, until about the end of the 18th century. (PLAST customs and traditions tend to borrow their elements from various periods in the Ukrainian history.)
